AGRA Middle East 2011 To Focus On Innovation To Address Escalating Food Demand
May 26, 2011 by Editor

More of the Middle East’s agricultural investments are being directed towards innovative methods and technologies that can provide better and sustainable solutions to the region’s growing food demand. AGRA Middle East, the largest agribusiness trade event in the region, will focus on this need for alternative agricultural strategies during its latest edition running from March 29 to 31, 2011 at Halls 2 and 3 of the Dubai World Trade Centre – Dubai International Exhibition Centre.
Middle Eastern governments are showing a greater preference for new agricultural models that minimize water use, pesticide application, and environmental degradation. Although the region is hard-pressed to ease its 90 per cent dependence on foreign sources of food, it is also recognizing the importance of adopting holistic solutions to its food dilemma. AGRA Middle East 2011 will gather local, regional and international manufacturers, suppliers and exporters to display and discuss possible solutions to the region’s present and future food security and water resource challenges.
“Traditional agricultural concepts will not be able to keep up with the numerous food-related problems faced by the Middle East, which are caused by multiple factors such as a burgeoning population, limited agricultural resources, and restricted water supplies. Out-of-the-box approaches are needed to come up with more feasible and long-term solutions. AGRA Middle East is an important platform for unveiling and discussing equipment, services and expertise that can meet this need,” said Goutam Malhotra, Exhibition Manager, AGRA Middle East 2011.
AGRA Middle East 2011 will feature the latest advances in agriculture and irrigation, animal husbandry and poultry farming, fisheries and aquaculture, floriculture and horticulture and agricultural machinery. Over 4,000 regional buyers, dealers and distributors are expected to attend this year’s event.
IIR Middle East is organizing AGRA Middle East 2011, while the UAE Ministry of Environment and Water, Dubai Municipality and Dubai Flower Centre are the main supporters. Complete event details are available at http://www.agramiddleeast.com.
United Nations USG, Valerie Amos To Address Humanitarian Conference On 28th March In Dubai
May 25, 2011 by Editor

Dubai – United Arab Emirates, March 13th 2011: The United Nations Under–Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Ms. Valerie Amos, has confirmed her participation in the eighth edition of Dubai International Humanitarian Aid and Development Conference and Exhibition (DIHAD), which will be held from 28 to 30 March 2011, under the patronage of H.H. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai.
Ms. Amos has held several important positions such as the Leader of the House of Lords and the Secretary of State for International Development to name a few. She will deliver a keynote speech during the opening ceremony of DIHAD, which has the theme “New Technologies: How These Impact Humanitarian and Development Operations.”
“The humanitarian system has embraced technology,” Ms. Amos said. ”We use it to assist with contingency planning and to run our systems and processes. Improving the engagement between the humanitarian and technology communities can revolutionise the way we work. That is why DIHAD is so important–it is a special gathering where humanitarians can be creative and innovative.”
According to Ms. Amos, the year 2010 was unprecedented both for the number and scale of natural disasters, including the devastating Haiti earthquake and the Pakistan floods, as well as lesser-publicised disasters elsewhere. These were in addition to long-running complex emergencies such as Somalia and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which also demanded greater attention. Moreover global shocks including population growth, resource scarcity and volatile food and fuel prices tipped many of the poorest and most vulnerable people into crisis.
As a result, 11 billion dollars were required in 2010 to meet humanitarian needs on the ground. Thousands of organisations were involved, often working in highly insecure environments, and facing access challenges and increasing demands for improved accountability from a growing donor base.
“People in Haiti were pulled out of the rubble on the strength of geo-located text messages,” Ms. Amos said. “The mobile phone is ubiquitous, Twitter saves lives, crowd-sourcing develops real time maps, and SMS is being used as an early warning device. Facebook is connecting victims of disasters in ways never seen before; YouTube includes disaster risk reduction public education messages.”
Technology can assist humanitarian activists to improve accountability to populations in need. The DIHAD Conference will also discuss the impact of new technologies on coordination and information management and will also look into ways new technologies are assisting disaster prone countries with capacity building and preparedness. DIHAD will also reveal how -properly harnessed- new mobile communications tools can provide humanitarian agencies with much of the information that they require in order to directly target assistance in the most useful way and respond to the real needs of affected people.

The Address Downtown Wins Anchor Masterchef Challenge

Following a nail-biting final yesterday morning, the team from The Address Downtown, Dubai has been awarded the coveted title of Anchor MasterChef Champions 2011.
Daniel Edward, Speciality Sous Chef and Dedy Supriady, Executive Pastry Chef, managed to keep their cool during the final ‘mystery basket’ round, which, the judges noted, helped them produce an exceptional standard of cuisine. The final round was far from easy, with three other teams from the most respected hotels in the UAE – Grosvenor House, Dubai; Grand Millennium Abu Dhabi and The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina – also vying for the title
“We only had the first round and then the final to try and impress the judges, so we really tried to push the boat out with the ingredients, methods and flavour combinations”, says Daniel. “It was a great competition but extremely tough – we were up against some amazing opposition and as we all had the same ingredients, producing something that really stood out was a real challenge.”
Dedy agreed. “The restaurant business is a great industry to be involved in, particularly in this part of world. Chefs are not afraid to push the boundaries and taking part in this competition gives us all added motivation to keep striving to be the best.”
This is the second year that Fonterra has hosted the Anchor MasterChef Challenge and Chef Peter Hallmanns, Fonterra’s Advisory Chef, said this added to the competitors’ motivation. “We all saw what the teams last year were able to produce and this set a very high standard for this year’s competitors. Across the board, the imagination and thought that went into the menus really was remarkable.
“This competition is designed for young chefs with an ambition to succeed and their commitment and drive is so encouraging to see. Competitions like this really do bring out the best in the chefs, and it is important they see for themselves what their peers are producing to make sure the region’s culinary industry stays one step ahead.”
Nana Supriatna, and Ranu B. D. Kaboel from Grosvenor House, Dubai were runners-up in the competition. “Chefs are naturally competitive and we were in this to win!” says Nana. “But saying that, this is the first time we have reached the final of a professional competition and this has given us both a great sense of achievement.”
The dishes were judged by a panel of independent and accredited chefs, adhering to WACS (World Association of Chefs Societies), recommended standards.
The competition once again took place in Fonterra’s Culinarium, its professional state-of-the-art kitchen, which hosts competitions, workshops and training sessions for chefs from across the GCC throughout the year.
The Address Downtown, Dubai received AED 15,000 per team; Runners-up, Grosvenor House, Dubai, received AED 10,000 and Georgiy Danilov and Lev Muradov from Grand Millennium Abu Dhabi in third place received AED 5,000. Luckasz Konieskny and Audaux Ludovic from The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina were awarded fourth position
The Anchor MasterChef Challenge is just one of a number of culinary events being hosted by Fonterra between January and July 2011. The New Zealand-based company is committed to providing young chefs with the opportunity to develop their skills through demanding competitions and challenging workshops.
