RTA Announces Implementation Of Federal Traffic Link

His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), announced that Drivers & Vehicles Licensing System in Dubai Emirate has undergone a quality shift over the last two years reflected in the launch of a number of initiatives aimed at upgrading drivers training & licensing services, licensing of drivers, uplifting the safety level of novice drivers, implementation of the federal traffic link system and developing & diversifying the channels through which RTA delivers its services to customers.

Service Delivery Channels   RTA Chairman of the Board and Executive Director explained the above saying: “Upgrading licensing services delivery channels project aims at launching new channels for delivering services to Licensing Agency’s customers, besides upgrading the traditional service delivery channels through the service centers and partners. Owing to this project, it is now possible for customers to process the services provided by the Licensing Agency through RTA website (www.rta.ae), Call Center (8009090) and Trusted Agents (Insurance companies and eyesight testing centers).   Traffic Link   RTA managed to complete the link with the Federal Traffic System and now it is possible for drivers and owners of vehicles registered in Dubai to renew their driving licenses and the registration of their vehicles in other Emirates. It is also now possible for drivers and owners of vehicles registered in other Emirates to renew their driving licenses and renew the registration of their vehicles in three centers; Al Barsha Center, Umm Ramool Center, and Deira Center. The project aims at simplifying the procedures for RTA customers in other Emirates, linking offences made in other Emirates with RTA e-licensing system such that they can be automatically renewed, and delivering the services of the Federal Traffic System to customers dealing with the licensing bodies in other Emirates at RTA-affiliated service delivery centers.   Online Selling of Numbers   RTA launched licensing number online selling service; which contributed to upgrading the relationship with customer categories and strategic partners as the online service provides equitable chances to various community segments in buying number plates as well as settling the sale proceeds. The service also saved customers time and effort, led to reduced expenses, higher revenues and lower risks, and improved the applicable method of selling number plates through controlling the volume of demand and supply without contradicting with customers satisfaction through stepping up the sales means and outlets. Provisional Licensing    RTA conducted a study of the reality of traffic safety and the extent of drivers compliance with road safety systems and legislations; which concluded to that the overwhelming majority of fatal traffic accidents are caused by novice drivers who lack the experience of the optimal driving method. Pursuant to these results, RTA made a suggestion to the Ministry of Interior to explore the possibility of developing a series of procedures with a view to boosting road safety such as developing additional controls and stipulations applicable to novice drivers at the federal level.  There is also a recommendation to subject these drivers, after obtaining the provisional driving license, to a mandatory training provided the training program has to include lectures dedicated to traffic safety, driving skills, how to deal with road risks and vehicle driving simulators.   Opening Traffic Files   RTA submitted to the Ministry of Interior a suggestion to explore the possibility of opening a traffic file to start training of driving light vehicles for those who have completed 17.5 years; provided they will not be issued with driving licenses unless they have passed the test and completed 18 years of age. The suggestion satisfies the needs of many youth who have completed the General School Secondary Certificate but still under 18 years and interested in starting the training & qualifying before the start of the academic year of universities and engaged in college studies; which is particularly relevant as training and education on vehicle driving is a lengthy process which might undermine the academic assimilation of the student. The best global practices in this regard offer license applicants an opportunity to have a driving training exposure before completing 18 years.   Medical Fitness Test   RTA is reviewing the Dubai Health Authority the mechanism of applying the Medical Fitness Test to professional drivers such as drivers of taxis and buses. The procedure aims at reducing the rate of driver health-related accidents which often result in immoderate losses and in some cases lead to fatalities. The suggestion conforms to the provisions of Article No (15) of the Driving & Traffic Law; which stipulates the submission of a proof of the medical fitness by those applying for driving licenses. It also obliges senior (elderly) drivers to submit medical certificates proving their driving abilities, and obliges professional drivers (taxis and buses) to submit medical certificates manifesting their medical fitness for driving once every five years.   Training Methodologies and Manuals   RTA has developed comprehensive drivers training manuals for drivers, instructors and examiners. A comprehensive training program has also been developed for light vehicles and motorcycles for examiners and instructors under the supervision of a specialized company. Instructors are issued with certificates for practicing their profession based on the instructors performance in the test. All standards adopted by service providers are being identified and benchmarked against the specialized international systems applicable in this regard. All technical terminologies in use were standardized and generalized and the technical testing standards applied by all partners were also standardized.   In coordination with the Ministry of Interior, RTA is upgrading safe specifications of recovery and towing vehicles as they have considerable impact on curbing traffic accidents resulting from the dropping of vehicles loaded on recovery and towing vehicles. RTA studied this issue and developed the required specifications in line with the best international specifications where the findings and specifications were shared with the Ministry, said Al Tayer in a final comment.

SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), the global leader in flash memory cards, announced a 64-gigabit (Gb), 2-bits-per-cell (X2) based monolithic chip made on 19-nanometer (nm) technology, the most advanced memory process technology node in the world. This latest technology enables SanDisk to produce embedded and removable storage devices with the high capacities and small form factors used in mobile phones, tablet computers and other devices.

SanDisk will sample its 19nm 64Gb X2 device this quarter and expects to begin high-volume production in the second half of 2011. At that time, SanDisk will also add 3-bits-per-cell (X3) products fabricated with the 19nm process technology to its product lineup.

“We are excited to introduce the world’s smallest and lowest-cost NAND flash chips based on industry-leading 19nm process technology in our ongoing collaboration with our manufacturing partner Toshiba,” said Yoram Cedar, executive vice president and chief technology officer, SanDisk. “Products based on this technology are designed to enable new applications, form factors and consumer experience that will continue to drive the flash industry to new heights.”

The 19nm memory die uses the most sophisticated flash memory technology node to date, including advanced process innovations and cell-design solutions. SanDisk’s All-Bit-Line (ABL) architecture with proprietary programming algorithms and multi-level data storage management schemes help yield multi-level cell (MLC) NAND flash memory chips that do not sacrifice performance or reliability.

Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. Announces Expansion Of Its Middle East Cruise Season In 2011/12

May 28, 2011 by

Royal Caribbean International announces the extension of its third consecutive season in the Middle East with 18 round-trip 7-night sailings and two 12-night sailings from Dubai to India starting in November 2011 through to April 2012.

The move is part of the deployment of a historic number of cruises by the global cruise brand which has 22 ships currently in service, offering unique cruise tour land packages in Alaska, Canada, Middle East, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

A recent survey of the Cruise Line International Association saw agents report that cruising has earned the #1 ranking in consumer interest compared to other types of travel. Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. – with its three global brands: Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises – has yet again increased its fleet size to accommodate its demand that is growing at unprecedented rates.

For its 2011/12 season Royal Caribbean International’s Brilliance of the Seas is offering seven-night cruises in the region, which will start in Dubai, sail to Fujairah and dock in Muscat. She then continues via Abu Dhabi back to Dubai. Due to the high demand, Royal Caribbean International has also extended its Middle East season for two months starting in November 2011. The interest in the two itineraries to India, which were introduced in 2010, was enormously high and therefore will be implemented again in the 2011/12 season. The two 12-night India itineraries will start in Dubai, sail to Mumbai, Goa, New Mangalore – which is a new port this season – and call into Cochin. After two days at sea the ship will arrive in Muscat and then sail back to Dubai.

Helen Beck, Regional Director, International Representatives, EMEA, for Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Club Cruises says that Brilliance of the Seas has just concluded a successful second season sailing around the Gulf.

“We’ve received great feedback from our guests on the new 12-night itineraries sailing to India that we introduced this year. We are happy to bring Brilliance of the Seas back to Dubai in November starting her longer third season in the region.”

When hotel rates in Dubai came under pressure with decreasing numbers of inbound tourists, the increasing number of cruise travellers helped the industry bounce back. In 2005, there were only 13 ships serving travellers; but this figure almost doubled the following year, further increasing to 55 ships by 2007, and 87 ships by 2009, whilst in 2010 there were 103 ships that carried 390,255 passengers and the Department of Tourism is expecting to receive 135 ships in the year to 2012. That number is likely to increase to approximately 180 by 2015 as the number of cruise travellers continue to increase in the region.

“The interest and awareness of cruise travel both within the region and throughout the rest of the world is increasing exponentially among travellers from within the Middle East itself. There is a huge potential for cruising in the region, and we are already predicting yet another record breaking year as we gear up for next year’s season,” Helen Beck concludes.

Outside of the Middle East region, Royal Caribbean International unveiled its 2012 Europe cruise and cruisetour season, upping the ante from its 2011 lineup of 11 ships to 12 for 2012, which will again include two Freedom-class ships, the largest and most groundbreaking in the line’s fleet to sail European waters. Amsterdam will debut as a homeport, for a total of 12, with ships calling into 101 ports in 34 countries on itineraries ranging from three to 16 nights.

In addition to the 12 homeports from which guests can choose, Royal Caribbean is also offering eight “interports” – where guests can board itineraries en route – creating 20 options for embarkation and disembarkation, including Toulon, Marseille and Le Havre in France; Genoa, Messina (Sicily) and Bari in Italy; Valencia, Spain; and Kusadasi (Ephesus) in Turkey. Maiden calls will also be made at Arhus, Denmark; Klaksvik, Faroe Islands; and Leknes (Lofoten) in Norway.

Celebrity Cruises is also strengthening its summer/autumn season for 2012, when it will offer vacationers more opportunities to enjoy premium European cruises than ever before, with five ships visiting 70 ports in 22 countries, sailing from six departure ports, and featuring 19 distinct Mediterranean itineraries. Celebrity’s fleet currently consists of nine ships, with two additional Solstice Class ships scheduled to join the fleet.

The season will include a variety of premium cruise vacation opportunities to enjoy Alaska, Bermuda, Canada and New England, and a series of immersive cruise-tours in Europe and Alaska.

Some extended overnight stays and eight new ports will add even more depth to Celebrity’s already broad European offerings, including Klaksvik, Faroe Islands; Akureyri, Iceland; Bari, Catania and Ravenna, Italy; Skijolden, Norway; Koper, Slovenia and Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands. Travellers can enjoy these and the 62 other ports Celebrity will visit in Europe in 2012 in ultra-premium style, as the company is deploying four of its award-winning Solstice Class ships to sail full European seasons in 2012.

Guests who wish to deepen their European experience can take advantage of Celebrity’s cruise-tour offerings, which combine a cruise with a three- to five-night pre-cruise escorted land package in the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. The packages, exclusive to Celebrity Cruises, immerse guests in culture-rich destinations such as Amsterdam, Venice, Paris, the Italian Lakes, Florence, Madrid, London, and Cappadiocia in Turkey.

Dubai Media City Announces Exclusive Scholarship For Budding UAE National Musician

May 27, 2011 by

Dubai Media City (DMC), a member of TECOM Investments’ Media Cluster, today announced it will offer a special scholarship this year to a budding UAE national musician as part of its endeavour to nurture talented young artistes.

The region’s largest media hub’s announcement coincides with its support to the 7th Emirates International Peace Music Festival, an annual cultural and charitable event that will be held from 30 March – 3 April at various locations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah and Sharjah.

Organised by the Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra (EYSO), the festival will gather more than 40 nationalities under the banner of ‘Peace’ to inspire the co-existence of all nationalities through musical harmony.

DMC has been supporting EYSO since 2004 to help develop indigenous talent through organising the music festival that targets young and deserving musicians. EYSO has also established its first accredited music conservatory to attract UAE nationals and protect the orchestra from the migration of expatriate members. In addition, the young members also gain an opportunity to interact with internationally-recognized peers.

Addressing the pre-event press conference, Mohammad Abdullah, Managing Director of TECOM Investments’ Media Cluster, said: “Today’s youth are constantly looking at new avenues for professional learning in creative fields to chart their career. As a media cluster, we have always supported and encouraged talented youngsters through special programmes. Events such as the music festival offer us a platform to launch key initiatives and engage the community with outreach programmes.”

The Emirates Youth Symphony Orchestra has organized six annual festivals so far to showcase indigenous talent in the country and encourage the participation of emerging musicians. The initiative aims to help the youth develop the necessary aptitude and contribute to building a national symphony orchestra.

Riad Kudsi, Director of the Festival, said: “Young musicians living in the UAE must engage in music education and aim to enrich the country’s talent. In doing that, they will automatically gain a wider forum for showcasing their special skills. Creating a UAE-based orchestra is a step towards nurturing a rich base of talent within the country and facilitating a platform for an international audience.”

According to Khawlah Al Raihy, a previous recipient of the DMC scholarship, said: “The festival has proved a perfect avenue for young musicians in the country. Key support from EYSO and DMC has guided me to be more decisive about my music career and take classes from the Syrian conductor Riad Kudsi of EYSO. Similar events will certainly help more young musicians to set long-term goals and learn from experts across the globe.”

Established in 1993, the EYSO is a non-profit organisation created to cultivate and highlight the talent of young musicians and teach the universal language of classical music to children and teenagers.

The seventh Emirates International Peace Music Festival will include the Prague Youth Philharmonic Orchestra, the best youth orchestra in the Czech Republic. In addition to world-renowned young music prodigies such as Elli Choi (9-year old violinist) and Sarina Zhang (14-year old pianist and cellist), the award-winning Syrian solo singer Miral Faisal will render the Zahrat al Madaen (Fairooz).

EYSO music festivals and concerts are dedicated to charity programmes and entry is free of cost. The proceeds from donations are therefore allocated to charitable causes. The 7th Emirates International Peace Music festival (For Young Virtuosos) is dedicated to Japan’s earthquake and tsunami victims.

For details of time and venues, please visit EYSO website at www.musicnus.com.

TECOM Investments’ Media Cluster – Dubai Media City, Dubai Studio City and International Media Production Zone – has evolved dramatically through offering business friendly regulatory frameworks and a state-of-the-art infrastructure. Its support of industry events comes as part of its long term objective to build a knowledge base for the benefit of stakeholders in the media sector.
