More than 100 employees of companies working at Dubai Airport Freezone, participated in this year’s blood donation campaign led by the Freezone’s ‘Tawasul’ team for humanitarian and social services.
The campaign was held in cooperation with Al Wasl Hospital. Yousuf Behzad, Executive Director of Human Capital & Strategy at Dubai Airport Freezone said, "this blood donation campaign by the "Tawasul" team, links DAFZ, Al Wasl Hospital and members of the community who suffer in hospitals of the country due to lack of adequate blood supplies required for their treatment."
"The Tawasul Team is tasked by DAFZ to carry out activities and events that benefit society as a whole and raise hope and optimism in the community. The team works in line with a strategy to implement the corporate social responsibility policy of the Freezone," he added.
Since its inception, Tawasul has organised several activities such as visiting the homes of the elderly and health centers for people with special needs. Tawasul has also helped them to raise funds by organising auctions to sell the handicrafts and artwork made by people with special needs, to encourage them to interact more with society.
Behzad added that the campaign aims to provide the health authorities across the country, like clinics and hospitals, with the sufficient supplies of blood to meet the needs of their patients.
"Successful cooperation between Al Wasl Hospital and DAFZ has led to great results over the years. A specialised team of four doctors, a nurse and two assistants from Al Wasl Hospital screened the donors for suitability and supervised the donation," Behzad concluded.

Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC), a member of TECOM Investments, in collaboration with Blood Donation Centre (BDC), the central blood bank of Al Wasl Hospital, and supported by Empower organized a blood donation in order to meet the ongoing demand in the emirate.
In total, 99 members of the public and staff participated in the blood drive in just 5 hours, highlighting that even in the current summer temperatures, people are willing to do what they can to help those in need.
Dr. Ayesha Abdullah, Managing Director of Sciences Cluster, TECOM Investments, said: "Blood donations are an integral and essential part of our health care system and without them many of the life saving and life enhancing treatments that we take for granted cannot be conducted. This initiative reiterates DHCC’s commitment to the well-being of the community and I would like to thank everyone who has participated in our blood drive.
"It is important to raise awareness that one pint of blood can help save three to five lives but also that the need for donations is ongoing. If we are to meet this demand, we need organisations and individuals to become regular supporters because this is something that impacts the whole community."
Dr. Rena Saheb, Head of the Medical Unit in the Dubai – Blood Donation Center at Al Wasl Hospital said: "I would like to extend my gratitude to Dubai Healthcare City for conducting this blood drive. The demand from hospitals and clinics in Dubai is such that we need to conduct almost daily donation campaigns across Dubai. The process is virtually painless and the actual blood donation takes only around 7 minutes (depending on blood flow). All blood groups are required but the need for common blood groups is more."
Donating blood is considered healthy for its benefits of reducing the incidence of heart diseases in certain people, while activating the bone marrow to produce fresh blood cells and preventing the build-up of iron in the body over time.

Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), an integrated free zone technology park, and General Information Authority (GIA), in collaboration with Dubai Health Authority (DHA), organized a one-day blood donation drive at the headquarters of Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA).
Held on 20 June, the initiative witnessed a significant number of DSOA employees and customers volunteering to donate blood in aid of ‘Thalassemia’ patients as well as those in need of blood.
The blood donation drive was organized to mark the World Blood Donor’s Day. Set annually by World Health Organisation (WHO) for 14 June, the day acknowledged the gesture of millions of people around the world who volunteer to donate their blood for saving the lives of others or enhancing the chances of their recovery from various diseases. The 2010 event focused on young blood donors with its slogan ‘New blood for the world’.
Dr Juma Al Matrooshi, Executive Vice President – Corporate Excellence and Support – DSOA said: “DSOA’s participation emphasizes the approach it takes as an integrated community that seeks to enhance the bonds of communication and harmony. We are pleased to co-operate with two of the most significant institutions that are keen to provide services to the society through humanitarian initiatives and activities.”
Salem Al Shaer, Director General of GIA said: “We are pleased to work with DHA and DSOA to fulfill this initiative, which serves the local society and manifests one of the significant concepts of the UAE strategy. We are confident other organizations in the UAE will also come forward for the benefit of the community at large.”
DHA will ensure the delivery of the donated blood units to those with Thalassemia and heart diseases as well as the victims of accidents and other mishaps at all hospitals across the UAE.
The World Blood Donor Day is based on the need to pay tribute to those involved in relevant humanitarian initiatives while encouraging wider participation from the community.
