Jafza, the flagship entity of Economic Zones World (EZW), announced on the occasion of World Environment Day that it has been steadily energising its green efforts and actively managing utility usage to ensure minimal impact on the environment. The Free Zone has managed to save 4700KWH of electricity and AED 3.8 million in one year by curbing electricity consumption in buildings 14, 15, and 16.

As part of World Environment Day celebrations and its overall strategy to contribute to long-term business and community sustainability, EZW extended its support for the third consecutive year, to an event organised by the Ministry of Environment and Water at Dubai Mall on the 4th & 5th June, 2011. Jafza promoted environmental awareness by distributing information encouraging people to take daily measures to conserve energy and reduce their carbon footprint at the event.

Dr. Eng. Hamad Al Hashimi, MD, DIT and SVP, Corporate Communication, EZW said: “Economic Zones World has continually focused on corporate responsibility with respect to Community, Environment, Marketplace and Workplace and this forms an essential part of our operations. By participating in World Environment Day celebrations this year again we in Jafza encourage sustainable actions and environmental awareness in the community. Being mindful of one’s carbon footprint, relevant to this region and country in particular, will go a long way in ensuring sustainability. We have adopted many measures within the UAE and also in our projects across the globe and we hope to keep improving our carbon management and environmental activities.”

Specific measures undertaken by Jafza to save energy include the installation of timer controlled devices and photocells in parking areas, corridors and other parts of the buildings. Buildings 18 and 19 have been fitted with LED lights that consume less electricity.

Water saving devices have also been installed in office buildings resulting in 23% water savings. Additionally all sewage water and water drained from air conditioning units is recycled and used for irrigation. Refrigerants are also recycled and reused to minimise the free zone’s carbon footprint. Paper and aluminium can recycling bins were introduced a few years ago to encourage people to recycle.

EZW also extends its green strategies to its logistics developments and warehouses. In 2009, Jafza mandated all facility developments to follow green building standards and ensures its customers adhere strictly to them. This includes adding energy saving facilities, ensuring there are no ’over design’ items like roof Lightning Protection systems, optimising loads and a host of other measures.

Six months ago, EZW subsidiary Gazeley delivered in Jafza its first, state-of-the-art built-to-suit, environmentally efficient logistics facility in the Middle East. Featuring an array of eco- friendly measures, the 63,000 square metre distribution centre was built for global supply chain management company, CEVA Logistics. The project incorporates a wide range of sustainable features including solar powered lighting, the use of recycled and locally sourced materials and state-of-the-art warehouse lighting, complete with motion detectors and dimming controls; a system that uses at least 20% less energy than normal lighting. The suite of eco-initiatives helped the project achieve a LEED Silver rating.

The free zone operator’s other recent green initiatives include ‘think green’ campaigns, planting indigenous trees, 800 this year alone, and various other activities for environmental events such as Earth Hour, Earth Day and Clean Up UAE among others. This year, Jafza conducted a Recycling Awareness Campaign with Emirates Environmental Group (EEG) for the third consecutive year. The Free Zone collected 160 kilogrammes of used aluminum cans by placing dedicated recycling boxes for the campaign throughout key areas in the free zone including food courts, office buildings and labour camps.

Ducab is already exploring regional markets, but wants to use events like Middle East Electricity 2011 to expand its manufacturing presence and customer profile to key regional markets. While the UAE remains the cable manufacturer’s core market, countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Africa, Asia and parts of Europe look particularly promising in terms of business development. At current point in time, Ducab’s products are sold in over 40 countries worldwide, with approximately 65-70% of Ducab’s total sales made in the UAE.

“We consider MEEE an excellent platform to network with purchasers and decision-makers in the industry, and we are looking forward to a successful week ahead. We aim to highlight new additions to our product range, while simultaneously highlighting Ducab’s commitment to excellent customer service and engineering,” he added.

In order to spread awareness across the community at large, the newly launched ‘Safe Home Campaign’ by Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) is steering itself through select DEWA Customer Care Centers and Eros Digital Home Stores, and reaching out to people visiting these centers in Dubai. This educational campaign aims at raising awareness about the causes of electrical fires, by giving easy tips on how to be ‘Better Safe Than Sorry’ this summer, through specially set up kiosks at Eros Digital Home outlets located at Deira City Center, Mall of the Emirates, Lamcy Plaza and Arabian Center. Kiosks are also set up across DEWA Customer Care Centers located at the DEWA Head Office at Garhoud, Al Wasel, Umm Al Ramool, and Al Tawar. Visitors are given educational leaflets about safety measures and are invited to fill in response forms indicating simple symptoms of fire that invariably tend to get ignored by householders. It has been noted that people expose themselves to electrical mishaps due to ignorance on their part. Many a times people tend to ignore simple symptoms as a result of the ideal human mindset that is conditioned to think that nothing bad will ever happen to them, maybe others.

Speaking on the extension of this initiative, HE Mr. Saeed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA said, “Safety is a major part of the DEWA strategy and play an active role in all our policies.” HE mentioned that this educational campaign is launched to maintain safety of our consumers

Mr. Sonjib Banerjee, Technical Director, Duval Messien, said, “The campaign aims to further percolate the message of ‘Safe Home’ across all households by inviting public to share information indicating electrical threat at their respective homes. Feedback and insight taken from the home safety research will be shared with DEWA to enable a fully integrated plan of safety in the home.”

Mr. Deepak Babani, CEO, Eros Group, said, “The extension of this drive to select DEWA Customer Care Centers and Eros Digital Home Stores further reinstates our endeavor towards the safety of homes across Dubai. As a leading regional distributor of electrical appliances and equipments, we have the aftercare responsibility towards our customers and the spread of this campaign only strengthens our pledge that people sleep assured that they have taken every precaution and are safe at home.’’

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) today announced it is marking its sixth consecutive participation at the annual Dubai Summer Surprises (DSS) extravaganza through leveraging its presence at Modhesh World to educate the general public on the importance of energy conservation.

DEWA’s announcement comes as part of its aggressive endeavour to help widen public awareness on reducing power consumption levels and the various modes that could be adopted to minimise electricity charges.

Through hosting a series of activities, including workshops, DEWA particularly aims to target the younger generation and instill in them the importance of caring for the environment. DEWA is also offering tips and guidelines to its consumers, both residents and companies, on ways to decrease their energy consumption.

Abdullah Al Hajri, Acting Executive Vice President – Customer Services, said: “Raising the awareness of our communities on the imperative need for energy conservation in Dubai is paramount to DEWA’s philosophy, and we intend to utilize all our resources to make residents aware of this extremely important activity. Our participation at Modhesh World is a testament to our efforts to ensure that our young generation is educated not only on the reasons for preserving our natural wealth, but are also provided with practical means on ways to do so. We believe there are many small steps that an individual can take to impact a concrete and positive change on the environment.”

Engineer Amal Koshak, Senior Manager – Demand and Tariff Management, DEWA, said: “We have tailored our presence at Modesh World this year to make it more informative. While in the past we focused purely on entertaining our visitors, this year we have added an educational element as part of our ambition to demonstrate the value of the environment and why it must be protected. We are also using our presence to thank all the individuals and organizations that have participated in the various energy conservation initiatives we have held recently.”

DEWA’s more recent ‘Best Consumer’ campaign rewarded 13 home consumers with cash prizes amounting to AED22,000, for reducing individual water and electricity consumption. The ‘Conservation for a Better Tomorrow’ campaign, which aimed to encourage Dubai students, schools and universities to decrease their energy consumption, helped participating institutions minimize the use of water by nearly 42 per cent.

Dubai Electricity And Water Authority Launches Energy Saving Campaign For Summer

The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) today announced it has launched an emirate-wide awareness campaign to educate the general public about electricity peak load – between 12:00noon – 5:00pm in the summer months – which results in a 40 per cent increase in power consumption between morning and peak hours.

Aiming to encourage consumers to reduce their energy consumption during the specified peak hours, the awareness campaign will be rolled-out out throughout Dubai and inform the public on the various modes that could be adopted to minimise their electricity charges. It will include the distribution of leaflets and brochures to inform the industrial, commercial and residential customers on the need to conserve energy and the benefits that accrue to them as individuals and the wider community. The leaflets will also be provided to the staff and visitors to various government offices in addition to residential neighbourhoods.

During peak load times in the summer season, energy consumption in Dubai registers a dramatic increase, with air-conditioning alone accounting for nearly 60 per cent of the total power intake by residential and commercial users.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of DEWA, highlighted the important role played by DEWA in preserving Dubai’s energy resources in the face of the emirate’s increasing energy demands. He said: “We are conscious of our role as the energy provider to Dubai’s ever growing population. At the same time, we also appreciate the importance of preserving our natural resources for the benefit of the future generation. Our summer initiative aims to strengthen the awareness of the community for effectively contributing to this campaign.”

Engineer Amal Koshak, Senior Manager – Demand and Tariff Management, DEWA, stressed that DEWA’s main objective through this campaign is to promote the responsible use of electricity during peak hours. She said: “Instilling a culture of energy conservation is our primary objective of this summer campaign while also guiding our consumers for efficiently balancing their electricity usage during peak-load hours. People need to play an active role in the preservation of our environment and we are confident DEWA’s various education and motivational programmes will achieve that objective.”

DEWA’s awareness campaign highlights the small activities that individuals can do to decrease their electricity consumption. For example, switching off electrical appliances such as irons, washers and dryers, dish washers, water heaters and ovens during peak hours, as well as using moderate A/C temperature (24oC) in the occupied areas and raising it to 28o C or switching off in the unoccupied areas can impact a significant difference in power savings.

Spearheading the drive for energy conservation in the region, DEWA has been conducting several programmes and initiatives including the World Environment Day activities that saw it hosting a series of exhibitions and workshops on water and paper recycling.

DEWA’s more recent ‘Best Consumer’ campaign rewarded 13 home consumers with cash prizes amounting to AED22,000 for reducing individual water and electricity consumption. The ‘Conservation for a Better Tomorrow’ campaign, which aimed to encourage Dubai students, schools and universities to decrease their energy consumption, helped participating institutions minimize the use of water by nearly 42 per cent.
