From today, Middle East movie-goers are set for their most dynamic cinema experience to date as newly rebranded VOX Cinemas sets about delivering exciting new seating, ticketing, dining and big screen cinema options directly based on customer feedback and research.

The Etisalat Group is placing the customer experience at the forefront of its technology investment strategy as it deploys the most modern, next-generation mobile and fixed-line infrastructure across Asia, Africa and the Middle East. Etisalat’s technology strategist went on to describe the investments that Etisalat has made across its regional footprint, including the deployment of over 2 million kilometers of fiber optic cable in the UAE and the imminent launch of the UAE’s fastest mobile broadband service via LTE – the fourth generation mobile broadband technology. The Etisalat Group is also investing in LTE in Saudi Arabia and has an existing 3G network based on HSPDA which allows speeds of up to 42Mbps in Egypt. Al Zahid Reviews His Excellence Experience At Best Practices Conference 2010

Dr. Khalid Al Zahid, Director of Marine Transport, Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has delivered a presentation entitled “My Journey with Excellence” during his recent participation in the Best Practices Conference 2010 organized by the Department of Economic Development in collaboration with the Dubai Quality Group. His participation came in his capacity as winner of the Distinguished Government Employee Award 2009.
During the Conference, Al Zahid reviewed his experience with excellence and how he was impressed by the book of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, entitled “My Vision”, which he considered as a basic source of inspiration with respect to a number of ideas in the academic and professional arenas.
With regard to the academic aspect, the Director of Marine Transport spoke about the factors underlying his selection of Beach Engineering as a useful field of activity for the nation. He referred to the numerous difficulties encountered in this field due to the scarce local experiences and reference material. However, with strong determination and patience he has managed to achieve his aspirations by obtaining his PhD while continuing to discharge his normal official duty.
Regarding the practical aspect of his life, Al Zahid explained that, during his career, he filled various government posts, including project engineer, head of branch, head of section and director in a course of six years, during which he managed to obtain his Master degree. By so doing, Al Zahid is delivering a message to all individuals urging them to have the necessary will and determination to pursue their academic education during the course of their practical life through striking a balance between the two.
Al Zahid shed light on the milestones of his career culminated in obtaining the Distinguished Government Employee Award 2009; which was preceded by obtaining the Distinguished Government Technical Employee Award in 2004 as well. In addition, he has made a quantum leap in marine transport making it an inseparable part of the public transport set up providing smooth, safe and attractive services demonstrated in the launch of the waterbus, or the planning and introduction of water taxi and ferry, all of which make the first regional debut.
The Director of Marine Transport spoke about his own experience in leadership and how he benefited from the pioneers of this field, at the forefront of whom is His Excellency Mattar Al Tayer, RTA Chairman of the Board and Executive Director in matching the long-term strategic drive with the transient operational obligations, empowering & enriching human resources and working teams and managing the change within agencies and authorities.
He also reviewed his experience in the field of innovation showing how he introduced modern beach surveying systems and technologies in Dubai Emirate saving time, effort and money through the use of conventional methods. Commenting on his knowledge, he pointed out that his knowledge was enriched by visits to a number of developed countries where he familiarized himself with their best practices in marine transport, and the presentation of working papers in many conferences and international and regional forums as well as the effective participation in specialized professional panels.
It is noteworthy that Dr. Khalid Al Zahid had made effective participations in several official and unofficial events. In the official front, he was in charge of organizing several conferences and managing major events such as the Dubai Metro inauguration ceremony. Unofficially, he had a long standing experience with Dubai Television and many international and local events involving sports, community service and voluntary activities.
Dubai Customs Shares Its Experience In Risk Management With Government Departments

Dubai Customs shared its Risk management expertise with a number of Government Departments and Organizations participating in the “Risk & Emergency Management” seminar recently held by DGEP and was hosted by Dubai Police Officers Club. Dubai Customs confirmed that its success in managing potential risks contributed to increasing the revenues & number of seizures during the past two years.
Mr. Yousif Al Sahlawi, Senior Executive Director Corporate Affairs, Executive Director of Policies & legislation Division at Dubai Customs indicated at the beginning of the speech he delivered during the Seminar that Dubai Customs realized the importance of establishing a department specialized in Risks from an early stage. This department worked vigorously to identify operational risks (Internal), strategy (External) that could be hampered from achieving its objectives through setting operational plans for the departments work & Supported with alternative plans to ensure business success. These steps helped the Department reduce the risks to the utmost, rather than dealing with disasters that may result from them.
Al Sahlawi presented some of the initiatives taken by Dubai Customs to control the high risks, notably increasing revenues & rationalizing expenditures to control financial resources. The Department had executed phase 1 and phase 2 of Customs Fees Study Project by increasing customs declarations registration fees and some other services fees, with emphasis on the quality of services provided to compensate for the expected loss in the revenues during the forthcoming years due to providing customs exemptions on some goods as well as joining the free trade agreements.
Control foundations were set to ensure the approval of the upper management on all operational expenses which exceed (Dhs. 10000) Ten Thousand Dirham and capital & construction expenses of over (Dhs. 25000) Twenty Five Thousand Dirham. He stressed that this initiative has enabled Dubai Customs to increase customs revenue by 18% within two years.
He also pointed out that Dubai Customs efforts contributed to boosting customs compliance through implementing the intelligence control systems and the K9 Unit, in addition to increasing the number of mobile X-ray inspection machines & providing the inspectors with training courses and raising their awareness. Moreover, Customs implemented the incentive & awarding program which led to multiplying the number of seizures of customs cargo which went up from 843 seizures in 2007 to 1679 in 2009.
Mr. Al Sahlawi stated that Customs is ready to cope with the anticipated growth in Dubai over the upcoming years as it has taken the required plans for meeting the expected needs in order to avoid any obstacle which might threaten achieving the Department’s main objectives in the economic development of Dubai, whether in the increase of customs transactions, passengers or residents of the Emirate. Therefore, Customs developed a full-fledged e-system for customs declarations clearance (Mirsal 2) which is considered a comprehensive E-platform for providing over 80 customs services and completes transactions in record time (i.e. less than two minutes). It is expected that the number of the processed customs transactions through the system is to increase by 95% of the total transaction performed by the end of this year.
Furthermore, Dubai Customs launched the inspection and check-up system of the risk-free trucks using the x-ray technologies from bumper to bumper while they are moving without having to stop them and inspect them manually. A single machine is capable of inspecting 150 trucks an hour; thus, the growing demand on the movement of goods can be met.
The Department recently managed to restructure the coastal quay of Port Rashid to meet the increasing movement of ships which might be encountered at the Creek in the near future, besides adding a new port at Jebel Ali Port to meet the increasing demand of services and movement in the port.
