One of the largest hotels and resorts companies in the world, Sol Meliá has announced that it is to open its first regional hotel in Dubai. The Meliá Dubai, a five-star 164 bedroom ‘urban resort’ will open on 12th October 2011, to coincide with national day in Spain.

“This is our first property in the Arabian Gulf and the first step to realising our expansion plans for the region. We are currently negotiating with potential partners in Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Jordan and we hope to make further announcements in the near future,” commented Andre Gerondeau, Executive VP, Hotels Division at Sol Meliá Hotels and Resorts.

The number of visitors to Dubai from Spain has been increasing steadily. Emirates opened their first daily flight to Madrid last summer and combined with Iberia’s existing four weekly flights to Dubai, should improve on the 30,000 plus visitors Dubai received from Spain in 2010.

In addition Emirates fly daily to Sao Paulo, with new routes planned to Rio de Janiero and Buenos Aires, all destinations where Meliá has strong brand awareness. According to Daniel Lozano, Senior Vice President, the Meliá brand, opening in the Gulf was a strategic step.

“We chose Dubai because this is the commercial hub for the region and we felt our brand attributes would suit such a cosmopolitan market. We believe that our traditional Spanish hospitality can offer a new dimension to customers in the region, while still appealing to Arab guests,” he said.

“Our brand strength in Germany, UK, Italy and elsewhere in Europe, will give us a competitive edge, when we begin our marketing campaigns in these regions, for inbound business to Dubai. We can also use that leverage to secure outbound business as well,” added Lozano.

The AED200 million Meliá Dubai will feature 5 restaurants a superb la carte fine dining restaurant, signature Indian restaurant Khazana by celebrity Chef Sanjeev Kapoor, ‘The Level’ a Meliá branded executive floor, a full service YHI SPA as well as a rooftop and swimming pool, which will feature a Spanish Tapas bar.

“Our target guest mix is 50-50 business and leisure, targeting GCC nationals, Indians, Germans, British, Spanish, Greeks, French and Brazilians. Opening rates will start at AED650 which represents excellent value for money, given the quality of the product and that unmistakable touch of Spanish hospitality,” said Gilles Longuet, General Manager, Meliá Dubai.

Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel Drops 22,000 Keys Worth Dhs6m Across Dubai And Abu Dhabi

More than 20,000 people in the UAE have the opportunity to take ownership of a gold key to the Gate in Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel’s six million dirham (Dhs 6million), four-month promotion, Unlock the Gate. Meanwhile, one of 2,000 platinum key holders could become the custodian of the key to an apartment lease for one year, among hundreds of other ‘on the spot’ prizes.

According to the hotel’s executive assistant manager, Craig Cook, the 396-room hotel in New Dubai has gone all out to ensure that the community feels that the hotel and its seven outlets ‘belong to them’.

Gold keys to the Gate are available at the Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel from the hotel’s concierge team or any of the restaurants, as well as through a special market distribution.

“We will give a key to the Gate to thousands of people across the Emirates. All they have to do is to bring their gold key to the hotel when they dine, spend Dhs 250 – and play immediately to win fabulous prizes from meals, to instant discounts, to beverages and special stays at the hotel,” he said.

The campaign will run at Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel until May 11 2011.

The Gate is giving away Dhs6m
Cook said that gold key holders can also win a special platinum key on-air as City 106.1, 92FM and Al Khaleejiah are all on-board and poised to give prizes in interactive competitions and banter, plus the opportunity to win one of the limited edition 2,000 platinum keys.

“The bounty of prizes on offer over the four months of Unlock the Gate tops the heady sum of Dhs 6m,” said Cook.

“Indeed, the 2,000 platinum key holders will be entered into a grand draw and could win the key to a one- or two-bedroom apartment for one year at the Residences at Ibn Battuta Gate.”

He confirmed that participants in Unlock the Gate can also become a platinum key holder by spending more than Dhs 5,000 at the hotel, and through the 7Days Ad7antage programme.

7Days is also distributing thousands of gold keys, and keys will also be given to those who pass certain productivity thresholds in booked business in conference and events or room bookings.

Creative marketing is ‘key’ According to the hotel’s director of business development, Guy Epsom, Ibn Battuta Gate is no stranger to ‘bullish promotions’ in a bear market.

“Dubai is a marketplace that needs new marketing energy and we are not afraid to go all out, as Unlock the Gate shows. We have been open since October 2010, and this is already our second big promotion.

“We recently gave away more the Dhs 1.5m worth of prizes in a month long campaign with Dubai Eye 103.8…and we don’t mean to stop here. Our team has come up with some great ideas and they are currently ‘cooking’,” said Epsom.

“Unlock the Gate will take centre stage at Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel for almost 16 weeks, giving UAE residents and visitors to Dubai ample chance to join in the fun and walk away with some incredible prizes, including an apartment for a year,” Epsom enthused.

On air, in print, online He also advised that the whole campaign is featured online at www.thegoodlife.ae

“We have taken the new-era step of moving our consumer promotions online and we have created a dedicated space under the brand banner of The Good Life.”

Michael Scully, managing director of the hotel’s owning company, Seven Tides said that Unlock the Gate is the inaugural campaign to be featured as part of The Good Life.

Going forward, The Good Life is ready to welcome new hotels and outlets scheduled to join the four-property cluster under the Mövenpick-Seven Tides association.

The Mövenpick Hotel Deira opened its doors on January 1 2011, the UAE’s first new hotel of the year. Two properties will open on the Palm Jumeirah in the next twelve months where the group already runs a successful restaurant at Oceana Beach Club – West 14th Grill and Bar.

Business brisk at the Gate Turning to business at the Gate, Scully said that the Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel has achieved occupancies of 62 per cent in the first twelve weeks of opening up to the end of the year.

“We are very pleased with the support shown from all booking profiles including corporate business from neighbouring zones such as Jebel Ali Free Zone and TECOM, as well as from individual bookings and walk-ins.”

He confirmed that Abu Dhabi residents seem to really like the hotel – the first five-star property in Dubai on the road from the capital.

“Local residents and GCC visitors particularly like the offer at Ibn Battuta Gate. And, we were thrilled to have a wonderful mix for our first big party in Al Bahou on New Year’s eve where we hosted more than 330 guests.”

Al Bahou, or the Grand Hall is the hotel’s central lobby area. It is vast measuring some 90 metres x 30 metres respectively.

Scully said that Al Bahou ‘wows’ the most experienced hotel guest with both its size and décor; it has 88 mammoth, eastern-style lanterns dangling into the large open space. It is also the gateway to the hotel’s seven outlets.

Signature outlets play Unlock the Gate Mistral is the total dining, all-day restaurant – already a great favourite for Friday brunch, and Shanghai Chic is open for dinner serving authentic Chinese cuisine with an authentic team to match.

Rustic Italian cuisine is available for lunch and dinner at Sicilia, and Chor Bazaar goes all out with Northern Indian dishes as well as a three-drum tandoori at dinner.

Meanwhile, Moroc – the contemporary bar, lounge and terrace serves bites, hubble, bubbles and more from 5.30pm until 1am, seven days a week, with Laurent Perrier Champagne at Dhs 395 per bottle, house bubbles for free until 7pm, and two drinks for the price of one* from 7-8pm every evening in an environment where contemporary Morocco is the obvious design influence.

The hotel’s Majlis bar and terrace is all taking part in Unlock the Gate, as is Pastane, for all-day gourmet treats.

The Armani Hotel Dubai, the first hotel designed by Giorgio Armani, in collaboration with leading property developer Emaar Properties PJSC, in Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, celebrates its first anniversary.

In addition to hosting an array of global leaders and celebrities, the hotel has welcomed several thousand guests, who seek the finest lifestyle experience – be it the signature suites and rooms designed by Giorgio Armani, a delectable range of food and beverage choices, or the first in-hotel Armani/SPA.

Mr Marc Dardenne, Chief Executive Officer Emaar Hotels & Resorts, says: “Armani Hotel Dubai has created a new benchmark in luxury hospitality, pushing the accepted norms and frontiers in the industry. The collaboration with Giorgio Armani brings a new level of aesthetics to the hotel. Additionally, the concept of Lifestyle Managers, who meet every need of the guests, introduced for the first time in Armani Hotel Dubai, has redefined service standards.”

Mr Dardenne adds: “The ‘Stay with Armani’ philosophy of Armani Hotels & Resorts has been overwhelmingly well received by guests, as it ensures they benefit from a ‘home-away-from-home’ experience that goes well beyond visual aesthetics. The hotel also enjoys several other special features, including the location in Burj Khalifa, which means it possesses unparalleled views of Dubai and beyond.”

One of only 65 hotels world-wide to be ranked on Condé Nast Traveller’s Hot List 2011, Armani Hotel Dubai’s approach to hospitality has also been honoured with it being judged the ‘Best Business Hotel’ – and Armani/Amal, the in-house Indian restaurant, the ‘Best Fine Dining Restaurant’ – at the Gulf Connoisseur Awards 2010.

Located in Burj Khalifa, occupying the floors concourse to 8 and levels 38 and 39, the hotel features 160 luxurious guest rooms and suites, eight innovative restaurants, exclusive retail outlets and a spa.

Every aspect of the hotel’s design and service offerings has been designed and planned by Giorgio Armani himself, from the bespoke furnishings to restaurant menus and in-room amenities. Practicality and elegance, the cornerstones of Armani’s signature style, combine with precious materials and sophisticated finishes to create a highly personalised space.

The choice of restaurants, all hugely popular with guests and walk-in diners, includes a selection of world cuisines ranging from Japanese and Indian to Mediterranean and authentic Italian fine dining. Also popular among guests are the three exclusive retail outlets: Armani/Galleria, a haute-couture boutique offering fashion accessories previously available in Paris only – and the first and only place in Dubai where the Giorgio Armani/Privé collection is showcased; Armani/Dolci, a luxurious confectionary store offering a selection of chocolates, biscuits, small savouries and more; and Armani/Fiori, a floral boutique offering exquisite fresh flower arrangements and exclusively designed vases by Giorgio Armani, which follow the fluid shapes of the flowers themselves.

As part of Armani Hotel Dubai’s continuous commitment to originate value-added features, the hotel introduced Armani/SPA, offering fully tailored sensory experiences that suit individual needs. Each unique space in the Armani/SPA provides a context for personalized treatments, personal fitness and sequential thermal bathing, as well as for private and social relaxation.

Armani Hotel Dubai is located in the heart of Downtown Dubai, described as “The Centre of Now”, and is within walking distance of The Dubai Mall, the world’s largest shopping and entertainment destination, and some of Dubai’s most compelling tourist attractions, including The Dubai Fountain, the world’s tallest performing fountain.

The Armani Hotel experience is now unfolding in Milan, Italy, where the second Armani hotel will open soon. More Armani hotels, resorts and residences are planned for the next few years in key international cities such as New York, Shanghai, London and Marrakech.

Travellers can now book hotel and car hire reservations on Emirates’ website, www.emirates.com/hotelsandcars. The functionality is part of a multi-year technology partnership between Emirates and ezRez Software, Inc. (www.ezrez.com) that was announced in October 2010.

In partnership with Tourico Holidays (www.touricoHolidays.com), Emirates offers the convenience of booking hotels, car hires and airline tickets on one booking reference. Travellers can also use www.emirates.com/hotelsandcars to book hotel rooms and car hires (independently from an Emirates flight booking), or add hotels and car hires to their existing itinerary, via the Booking Manager.

Customers can choose from more than 23,000 hotels in approximately 3,200 cities in 130 countries. Inventory for car hires is offered in 110 countries. In keeping with Emirates’ global client base, bookings can be made in 14 languages, and paid for in 42 currencies.

“Convenience is the key reason for our decision to provide land products — in addition to airline tickets — on our website. Travellers now have a one-stop shop for booking all of their core travel needs,” said Russell Sheldon, Senior Vice President Network Passenger Sales Development, Emirates.

The entire itinerary, whether booked individually or in a shopping cart with Emirates flights, is available through the “Manage a Booking” tab on the airline’s homepage. If no hotels or cars have been booked, the system will automatically offer personalised results, based on travel dates and destinations for the existing flight itinerary. Furthermore, hotel and car bookings can be conveniently modified or cancelled online.

This same functionality will power Emirates’ popular Dubai Stopovers option, allowing travellers to choose their hotel online, rather than having to call a ticket office. If booked together with an Emirates flight, the price for all hotels in Dubai includes meet & assist at the airport and hotel transfers. This is a unique product proposition that is only offered through Emirates’ Dubai Stopover program.

All technology and online functionality is provided by ezRez Software. All products are pre-paid and customer service will be handled by Tourico Holidays. Land products cannot be booked in Angola, Brazil, Ghana, Iran, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Sudan and Tanzania.
