The Roads & Transport Authority

Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has launched an awareness campaign among workers at Sinabor, Dubai to educate them on the safe road crossing to avoid traffic accidents, especially run-over accidents.

Engineer Maitha bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic & Roads Agency, said that the awareness campaign was a part of the Gulf Traffic Week 2011 Program, which spanned various age groups and occupational categories with a host of traffic awareness programs.

She said: “The awareness campaign, which started last Friday at Sinabor and is set to continue for one month, targets workers accommodated at Al Quoz and Jebel Ali areas by sending invitations and distributing ads at their residential complexes communicating to them the venue of the event a few days in advance. Participants have shown positive indicators depicting the success of the campaign.”

"Attended by more than 2000 workers, the campaign comprised awareness lectures on pedestrians’ safe & proper road crossing, and the distribution of awareness leaflets written in four languages namely: Arabic, English, Urdu, and Hindi of which 25,000 copies were printed. The events program included distributing reflective stickers to cyclists, staging contests about pedestrian crossings, and presenting gifts to winners in a bid to reward their participation and commitment to the awareness messages of the contest. Furthermore, a civil defense team carried out a mock drill to rescue workers whose bus sustained a crash," said Maitha.

"To ensure the success of the traffic awareness campaign, the Traffic & Roads Agency has coordinated the campaign with many RTA’s partners such as the Dubai Police, Dubai Civil Defense Department, Center of Ambulance Services, Dubai Electricity & Water Authority, Al Ahli Driving Institute, and 3M Company," she continued.

"Pedestrians’ safety indicators in Dubai illustrate the significant advancements made in the Agency’s Pedestrians’ Safety Plan with a view to reducing run-over accidents in Dubai. The past few years witnessed many field procedures and joint awareness efforts to control pedestrian accidents, which are considered among the gravest challenges facing traffic safety specialists. Traffic awareness efforts have reduced the ratio of run-over traffic accidents fatalities to 43 deaths last year (2010) compared to 78 cases in 2009, and 116 in 2008,” continued Maitha.

"The Agency’s pedestrian crossing plans are set to continue with the aim of reducing the annual pedestrians mortality, and we hope that this campaign will significantly help in curtailing the run-over accidents, since the figures and statistics of the Agency confirm that a big chunk of pedestrians accidents are attributed to workers category, who are liable to traffic accidents in the vicinity of their residence, the very areas targeted by the campaign.

The world knows Roger Taylor as the drummer of Duran Duran, one of the world’s most successful Rock Bands.
As if selling over 70 million records wasn’t enough, some may be surprised to learn that for the last decade Roger has also enjoyed an extremely successful career as a DJ.

For the past few years, Roger has had a residency at London’s celebrity hot spot The Met Bar, performing for the likes of Slash, David Gray, Marilyn Manson and Joaquin Phoenix, just to name a few.

Playing an eclectic mix of Rock, Hip Hop, various forms of House, up-to-the-minute dance tunes and even a bit of 80’s Electro, Roger sights influences stemming from long nights in New York’s infamous 80’s dance clubs, such as Danceteria, The Limelight, and Area – as well as the now legendary Rum Runner Club, where Roger formed Duran Duran with John Taylor and Nick Rhodes.

But what makes these gigs so extraordinary is that Roger Taylor also creates spectacular rhythm happenings by playing percussion along with the tracks. This combination of live music and deck devilment sends crowds into another dimension.

It’s fitting then that Roger Taylor and his long-term partner DJ sensation Jake Fonique should be the first Guest DJs for Rockstars Gone House – a series of incredible upcoming music extravaganzas in Dubai featuring world famous Rockstar DJs.

This first Rockstars Gone House event– featuring Roger Taylor and Jake Fonique – takes place at the CHI Club at The Lodge on 14th January 2011 from 9am – 3am. Tickets available at the door.

The Rockstars Gone House concept is the brainchild of Sam Razaghi, a successful music promoter from Vancouver, and his music promoter partner Leela McNamara.

The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA) has launched a wide-ranging clean-up campaign covering roads, public yards, parking lots, bridges, tunnels and project sites as part of RTA preparation for the welcoming of the blessed Eid al-Adha.

Explaining the nature of the Campaign, Nazim Faisal, Director of Roads & Facilities Maintenance, RTA Traffic & Roads Agency, said: “The Campaign comes in the context of sharing the festivities of the blessed Eid al-Adha and turning the city in an elegant fashion during this occasion; which stems out of RTA’s attention to provide a sparkling & untainted environment such that the city will remain a convenient living place for residents & visitors.

This is particularly relevant as Dubai tends to receive a large influx of visitors and tourists from within the UAE and abroad during Eids and events.”

A program is currently underway involving cleaning areas in the vicinity of Eid prayers, bridges and tunnels, with particular focus on washing the main tunnels & metal rail of bridges, removing dust & solid deposits on pavements specially bridges pavements, and washing pedestrian bridges & directional signs at key roads within the Emirate, according to Faisal.

“A team comprising engineers & inspectors from Roads & Facilities Maintenance Dep’t, in coordination with Roads Dep’t, has surveyed the neighbourhood of Eid prayers to initiate corrective measures for repairing any faults in roads, road marking and directional signs, check the cleanliness of road project sites an adjacent areas to ensure they are free from constructional waste, and ensure the clarity of traffic signals & road marks. The survey also checked the availability of maintenance tools with contractors, soundness of road elements, and the cleaning & washing of tunnels across the Emirate to ensure that they are well turned out during Eid days.

RTA Kicks Off ‘Schools Without Accidents’ Campaign In Collaboration With Ministry Of Interior

The Roads & Transport Authority (RTA), in collaboration with the Ministry of Interior and Knowledge and Human Development Authority in Dubai, has launched ‘Schools Without Accidents’ campaign.
Commenting on the Campaign, the Director of Traffic, RTA’s Traffic & Roads Agency Hussain Al Banna said: “The Campaign, which started in September and runs through until November, targets the school environment through addressing students, parents, and school bus drivers as well as the academic & administrative staff of Dubai schools. It also seeks to deliver general messages to drivers and all road users through the awareness flashes and in several other events held by the Traffic Awareness Section in coordination with our partners.”

“Traffic safety ranks among the priorities which RTA is seeking to achieve on Dubai roads, particularly during the seasons where traffic in the Emirate witnesses some changes such during “Back to School” period and changes in the weather condition; which are the main topics on which we will be concentrating during the last quarter of this year,” said Al Banna.

He confirmed that the traffic safety is one of the priorities the RTA is focused to enhance on Dubai’s roads and streets, particularly during the seasons where the traffic witnesses a number of changes like, the back to school and during the weather changes. These two conditions are the main mover for the traffic awareness, which will be focused on during the fourth quarter of the year.
"The awareness messages that RTA seeks to deliver through Schools Without Accidents campaign had been tailored to suit each age group, and as such the messages directed to parents and drivers differ from those intended to drivers to students. “Therefore RTA opted to capitalize on the technological and media channels to deliver its awareness messages to various categories, and accordingly we approached parents and drivers through messages over the local radio stations, RTA Virtual Messages Signs spread all over Dubai roads, and in the Cashier’s monitors of all branches of Al Ittihad Cooperative Society,” continued Al Banna.

He further added: “From the start of the academic year, the Traffic Awareness Teams have been deployed in several Dubai schools to carry out students-oriented activities and events encompassing applied programs about the safety belt, road crossing, and boarding & alighting from the school bus, as well as training bus conductors on how to receive children at the bus door, guiding them to the street pavement, and directing them to follow safe steps that protect them from run-over accidents. Events also included delivering lectures at some clubs and women societies such as the Social Development Center, Ministry of Social Affairs, where we will deliver a series of lectures about the responsibilities of parents in securing the safety of children, slowing down & increasing the attention upon approaching schools or parked school buses, and using the right-hand-side door of the vehicle for boarding or alighting of children.”

Al Banna stressed that the activities of traffic awareness programs oriented to students resumed in the first week of the academic year, where the school bus has visited several schools to explain the Golden Rule through giving a practical demonstration enabling children to get acquainted with the dangerous spots around the school bus and how to avoid them. He narrated the steps necessary for keeping clear from the bus, how to cross the road and the proper conduct on board the bus during normal or emergency conditions. Traffic Awareness Teams in Dubai schools have also carried out a variety of events as directed by RTA’s traffic awareness supervisors, and we are planning for the launch of new programs during the current academic year 2010/2011 that include smart and innovative quizzes aimed at diffusing traffic awareness which include printing educative brochures for blind students in Braille language. Coordination is in hand with some children-oriented television channels to explore the cooperation in producing and transmitting cartoon films related to traffic safety and awareness.
