Dubai Ladies Club, In Collaboration With Louis Vuitton, Hosts Gala Dinner And Charity Auction For Al Murjan Coral Reef Project On 9th January, 2011

Dubai Ladies Club, a member of the Dubai Women Establishment, in collaboration with Louis Vuitton, will host a Gala Dinner on Sunday, 9th January, 2011; to auction the works of art by eminent photographer Nadine Kanso, generously donated by Louis Vuitton to support the Al Murjan Coral Reef Project.

Kanso’s photographic series, ‘Al Madi Al Hader’, comprises of nine photographic creations and was commissioned by Louis Vuitton for a recent photo exhibition alongside the Louis Vuitton boutique in BurJuman Centre, in November 2010.

Muna Bin Kalli, Executive Director of Dubai Ladies Club commented, “Dubai Ladies Club has a longstanding relationship with Louis Vuttion, collaborating on various charitable initiatives and we are delighted to have the opportunity to partner with them once again in support of such an admirable cause. The Al Murjan Coral Reef Project was inspired by the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and her keenness to promote the concept of sustainable development of marine life in the United Arab Emirates. The proceeds from this auction will play a crucial part in continuous operation of this program including local training, education and research.”

During the Gala Dinner, Kanso’s nine photographic creations will be displayed in specially designed cases made of the Dhow’s wood, illuminated by a soft light and purposely placed on the floor to allow a fluid movement. During the event, guests will be able to walk among the cases and look vertically onto the pictures as they would do from a Dhow, onto the water.

Mr. Damien Vernet, General Manager Louis Vuitton Middle East and India added, “Louis Vuitton is very happy to be supporting the ‘Al Madi Al Hader’ initiative by Dubai-based artist Nadine Kanso, in partnership with the Dubai Ladies Club. The nine unique photographic creations by Nadine Kanso are a tribute to the maritime tradition of Dubai, and a testimony to the dynamic art scene of the Emirate. We are also very proud to be donating these works of art to the Dubai Ladies Club, in support of the Al Murjan Coral Reef project, with the Royal patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. At a time when Louis Vuitton is organising the last leg of the Louis Vuitton Trophy in the waters of Dubai, there could not be a more appropriate way of showcasing values that are close to the brands: respect of tradition and heritage, creativity, support for the Arts, and social responsibility.”

Nadine Kanso’s ‘Al Madi Al Hader’ series was inspired by the local and traditional – the Emirati dhow. The Arabian wooden racing boat posed the perfect juxtaposition vis a vis the modern yachting world that LV is associated with. The series of photographs provide detailed close up shots to document the hand-crafted quality of these dhows while also creating an artistic space that is open to manipulation. In that sense, Nadine has chosen to add layers to the photographs; instead of lapping waves, Nadine has employed the help of her signature Arabic calligraphy by crafting silver patterns, letters and numbers relating to life at sea. Nadine’s use of silver, known for its ability to lose its shine and change color over time, was a deliberate one; yet another technique to illustrate the constant evolution of the relationship between time and heritage.

Inspired by the vision of Her Highness Sheikha Manal bint Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, President of Dubai Women Establishment, wife of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Presidential Affairs, UAE, who is also the Honorary President of the Emirates Marine Environmental Group, Dubai Ladies Club launched the Al Murjan Coral Reef Project in association with Shangri-La Hotel Dubai and Traders Hotel Dubai in October 2010. Al Murjan – which means “coral” in Arabic – is an ambitious environmental project to develop an artificial reef in Dubai in a designated area of Dubai Ladies Club’s beach. The project will be executed by the Emirates Marine Environmental Group.

Al Murjan will be the first community-based coral reef development project within the UAE. The project will seek to build capacity at the community level through necessary trainings to community groups in coral reef education and awareness; management planning; and long-term financing and sustainability. Through Ladies Dive at Dubai Ladies Cub – which is the first and only Diving Centre dedicated for women from the local community will have the opportunity to get involved through a variety of volunteer programs and special diving camps organized by Dubai Ladies Club in collaboration with Emirates Marine Environmental Group. The project is also supported by Barakat Trading and Regaltech.

Which is why we were delighted to welcome Marian Behnam as Keynote Speaker whose lifelong dedication to humanitarian issues and her tireless efforts to advocate for underprivileged women across the region is an inspiration to all."

She added, “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the American Women’s Association of Dubai for collaborating with us in organising this event for the occasion of the International Women’s Day. Emirates NBD, the leading bank in the region, hosted a Charity Putt at the recently held Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2010, to raise AED10,000 for the local philanthropic organisation, Dubai Cares. This is in line with Emirates NBD’s commitment to support social and charitable causes, while at the same time encouraging sporting activities in the Emirate.

“As a neighbourhood bank committed to meeting the needs of the local community, Emirates NBD aims to support all deserving social causes, especially Dubai Cares, which helps provide quality primary education to children in developing countries,” said Rick Pudner, Group CEO, Emirates NBD, who presented the cheque to Ms Yasemin Saib, a representative of Dubai Cares. “We are pleased that this has coincided with the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters 2010, giving us an opportunity to reiterate our commitment to sports in the UAE.”

“The Dubai Ladies’ Masters is a prestigious annual event on the Ladies’ European Tour and we are grateful to Emirates NBD Bank for choosing Dubai Cares as its charity partner for the event. This gesture by the country’s leading bank is evidence of the growing emphasis that is being laid on corporate social responsibility in the UAE. Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum of providing primary-age children globally with quality education,” said Tariq Al Gurg, Chief Executive Officer, Dubai Cares.

Iben Tinning And Melissa Share Lead In Omega Dubai Ladies Masters

Tinning, starting the day two shots off the pace, fired a 69 while England’s Reid, who trailed by three strokes, carded a tidy 68 to go eight under for the tournament on 208, one shot ahead of Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist and Lydia Hall, the overnight leader from Wales.

Denmark’s top female golfer Tinning mixed four birdies with a bogey (on the eighth) to keep alive her hopes of ending her great career with a flourish while Reid posted a birdie-birdie finish to join Tinning at the top of the leaderboard.Sweden’s Louise Stahle, who holds the Majlis course record of 64 she shot in 2007, matched the day’s best score of 68 to join America’s Christina Kim at fifth place on a five-under-par 213. Kim closed with a level-par 72.

Overnight leader Hall endured a frustrating front nine where she dropped three shots, including a double-bogey on the second, but lit up the back nine with four birdies to stay within striking range of the leaders.

Meanwhile, the tournament’s top-draw Michelle Wie slipped down to tied 17th on a level-par 216 after making a double-bogey finish in her third-round 73. Defending champion In-Kyung Kim followed her 69, 75 with a disappointing 73 to share the 12th place with three others.

Tinning, who had broken 70 for the second day on the trot, attributed the streak to her talent. "I am not going for everything. I am not trying to play stupid golf. I am only attacking the holes I should attack. I was really nervous playing the first few holes, but I am happy to finish off with a birdie, par, par. I had a good birdie on the 16th and a great par on the 15th."

Melissa Reid was also pleased with her efforts. "A 68 is my best round in Dubai. It was a great feeling to finish with a birdie-birdie," said Reid, the winner of the Turkish Airlines Open.

"I hit really well on the driving range and got my rhythm going. I was a bit unlucky on the ninth. I thought I hit a good shot, but it went into water," said who was placed third on the Henderson Money List with euro 235,871 in earnings from 20 events before the start of this season-ending Ladies European Tour event.

"A victory here would be a nice Christmas present, but there are 18 more holes to play – a long way to go. But I have put myself in a good position. Another 68 in the final round would be really nice."

Sweden’s Nordqvist needed to fight hard for her 71. "I didn’t hit my irons well, but hung in there with a good short game. I had a good chance of making a birdie on the 18th, but couldn’t drop the ball in despite hitting a good putt.

"I have nothing to lose. I will go out there and fire at it."

Tinning Crowned Omega Dubai Ladies Masters Champion

December 23, 2010 by

Iben Tinning of Denmark won the 2010 Omega Dubai Ladies Masters at the Emirates Golf Club on Saturday.

The former European number one, playing her last competitive event before calling it quits, closed with a round of three-under par 69 for a tournament total of 11-under par 278 to take the honours, two shots ahead of Sweden’s Anna Nordqvist.

Starting the day tied for lead with England’s Melissa Reid, Tinning closed with a birdie and was hugged by almost every member of the Ladies European Tour on the 18th green.

Wth her husband Lasse on the bag, Tinning made the turn tied for the lead with Melissa Reid at nine-under, but back-to-back birdies on the 10th and 11th saw her establish a clear three-shot lead as Reid bogeyed the 10th.
Reid, the winner of the Turkish Airlines Open, however, refused to give up. She birdied the 13th to narrow the gap to two and then a bogey on the 15th by Tinning further reduced her lead to just one shot with three holes to play.

On 17th, Reid’s 20-footer attempt for birdie agonizingly slid past, and she hit it into the right trees off the tee on the par-5 18th and finished with a bogey.

Nordqvist could have put Tinning under more pressure, but her birdie putts from eight feet on both 17th and 18th holes failed to drop in.

With three top ten finishes from four previous appearances in Dubai, the tournament holds a special place in Tinning’s heart and she will remember the tearful ending to her 2007 campaign when she tied for second behind Annika Sorenstam.

Her title hopes drowned in the lake as her ball found the water in front of the 18th green resulting in a double bogey, but, as she said on Friday, that believed in fairytale endings.

Indeed, winning the last event of her career and that too in a field which comprised big guns like Michelle Wie, In-Kyung Kim and Laura Davies was nothing short of a fairytale.

Golf Stars Light Up Emirates Tee Party At Dubai Ladies Masters

Lucky golf fans who won competitions in publications in Dubai were today toasting the star players who helped get the Emirates Airline Tee Party swinging. For the second year, the Tee Party took place in the Emirates Chalet at the Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters, running from 6th to 12th December at the Emirates Golf Club.

Major winner Laura Davies conducted a golf clinic for Emirates’ guests, shared technical tips and fielded questions on her life as one of the most accomplished players of her generation. Davies, who has been instrumental in the growth of women’s golf over the past quarter century, was delighted to get involved. She said: "It is great to meet ladies who are keen to develop their skills and I am always happy to share my enthusiasm for the game. The Omega Dubai Ladies’ Masters is a fantastic event and the Emirates Tee Party sounds like a lot of fun.”

The 30 ladies got a close-up look at Laura Davies’ skills, and had a day to remember at the Emirates Golf Club, starting in style with a chauffeur drive to the course. They were treated to a welcome beverage on arrival before heading to the driving range to watch Davies warm up for her first round of the Dhs 2.75million (500,000 Euros) tournament, which also features last year’s winner In-Kyung Kim (from South Korea), American sensation Michelle Wie and Australian pro Nikki Garrett, who is flying the flag for Emirates.

One of the participants in the Emirates Tee Party, Lisa Mackenzie said, “This morning’s golf clinic was a wonderful opportunity to pick up some useful tips from an experienced lady golfer.” Each winner got a chance to hit a few golf balls, and get some personal instruction from Laura Davies. After strolling around the magnificent Majlis course to see the players in action – the ladies were treated to a Timeless Spa treatment. And to round off the day, one lucky guest won Emirates hospitality passes to 2011 sports events, including Dubai Desert Classic (golf), Dubai World Cup (horse racing), Dubai World Championship (golf) and Emirates Airline Dubai Sevens (rugby).
