Dubai Customs often confirms its interest in employing people of special needs in jobs that suit their qualifications and credentials. The department agreed with Community Development Authority to start a series of cooperation programs between them in this regard.

Dubai Customs invited CDA for a visit to the department for more interaction with the “Kate” program that was launched by the authority to enable people of special needs and integrate them in a society that respects all categories, and based on legislations that guarantee them the same rights and privileges attained by other local employees.
HH Sheikh Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum, CEO Social Care at DCA led the visiting delegation which included Amna Obeidly, director of Social Care, and Dr. Eman Jad, head of Special Need Services.  The delegation was received at the department’s main building by Fahad Hamad Bin Fahad Executive Director HR, Finance & Administration Division, Feryal Tawakul, Executive Director, Community Affairs and Government Partnership Division, Ali Maqhawi, Director of the Custom’s Airport Operations, and Ms. Amna Humood Al Suwaidi, Sr. Manager – Talent Management.    At the beginning of the meeting, Fahd welcomed the delegation and highly praised CDA’s “AlKait” initiative for employing the disabled saying that knowing it in details can help the department realize some of its corporate values in regard of issues such as Emiratization and employing people of special needs. He said:” Department is proud to have this category among its staff, and it responds positively with initiatives in this regard. So, it is important for us to foster our partnership with the Community Development Authority in order to help people of special needs integrate in society in a better way and help them reach out for their rights. It is an initiative with a social and national dimension and we are happy to adopt it”.
Fahd added: “We walked in that road before, and we have 5 employees of special needs who work in a healthy environment and facilities that take the international standards into consideration. Data base at CDA will help us get more access to these people. We know that “AlKait “ initiative is based on scientific methodology. It will also help us achieve our vision and social responsibility programs towards Emiratization”.    For his part, HH Sheikh Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum, CEO Social Care at DCA thanked Dubai Customs for the invitation and their positive response towards “Alkait” program. HH added that they seek for better response from other employers towards the vision and mission of the program that  goes in line with the Federal Law number (29) for 2006 which guarantees the rights of special needs and equates them with other members of society in terms of legislations and economic, and social development programs. That law was modified in December 2009 by renaming it “the law of the disabled” instead of the “law of people of special needs” in order to guarantee them more rights. The United Arab Emirate also endorsed the UN’s international treaty for the rights of the disabled in 19 March 2010.     HH Sheikh Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum added that “Alkait” program provides employers and disabled job seekers a number of services before, after and during employment process. It helps job seekers in evaluation and assessment during the interview, preparation of CV, training and professional consultation. As for employers, the program helps them access disabled job seekers. A team from the program visits work environment to check its suitability to the needs of the disabled candidate as requested by the employer. The program also has services that are related to awareness and training. All of these services will contribute in closing the gap between the employers’ expectations and requirements, and those of the disabled employees.
HH Sheikh Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum said that the Authority has delivered some good models to the workforce who proved to be high competent in their work. Also, there are many specialized studies in the field that confirm that the disabled people are more productive and disciplined in their work than other people because they are always more persistent.     Feryal Tawakul, Executive Director, Community Affairs and Government Partnership Division at Dubai Customs thanked the Authority for their efforts and their noble initiative confirming that enabling the disabled and turning them into productive individuals is a national duty that should be given priority at all government and private departments. She added that commitment to employ people of special needs will be one of the items of the memorandum of understanding that will be signed between Dubai Customs and CDA soon.     As a real translation of this meeting, CDA delegation will review the jobs available at Dubai Customs to see which ones suit disabled job seekers who are included in the Authority’s data base.    Caption: CDA delegation during the meeting at Dubai Customs Mr. Fahad Hamad Bin Fahd HR Executive Director introduces Dubai Customs shield to HH Sheikh Maktoum Bin Butti Al Maktoum.

New Student Orientation Program Held At Dubai Womens College With Emphasis On Healthy Living

Dubai Women’s College (DWC) recently held New Student Orientation program for 555 fresh high school graduates with emphasis on healthy living.

The program which will run till September 21, 2010 aimed at helping students understand the DWC campus culture: how technology is used on campus, from online SharePoint to the online campus Portal; the emphasis on healthy living, from healthy food offerings in the cafeteria to physical education classes in the state-of-the-art DWC Fitness Center – and how DWC cares about the health and well-being of its students; and resources for student success, including counseling services, IT support, and academic advising.

This year’s event was very special as dietitians and nutritionists from Abela & Co., a leading company in offering healthy eating for over 15 years at DWC, were present at DWC cafeteria to create awareness among the young students about the importance of healthy eating and how to take advantage of the healthy options and the nutrition information that DWC offer in its cafeteria.

Mariam Saleh, Nutrition Manager at Abela & Co. said many important points were tackled at the orientation session such as ‘How to choose a balanced meal containing the necessary nutrients from protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals’.” Mariam added that a balanced meal can be an easy task for them as DWC cafeteria offers the color coded menu based on the nutrient content of the food so for instance food labeled in purple is high in proteins and iron.

Mariam also explained how the food at the college cafeteria is cooked in trans fat free-oils and the health risks of trans fat. DWC is the only college to have incorporated physical education classes into the curriculum, introduced healthy foods without trans-fats in the cafeteria and eliminated sodas and candy from the campus.

“Students were advised to extend this healthy practice to their daily living outside the college and at home to avoid extra calories, fat and cholesterol, coming from junk food and candies,” she pointed out.

All students were also given a leaflet prepared by the nutrition team at Abela & Co. titled EAT SMART FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE that explains all the above and the advantages of healthy eating on academic performance.
From his part, Dr. Howard Reed, Director of DWC commented on having an orientation session on healthy food for the first time in a higher educational institution in UAE by saying “Dubai Women’s College is known for providing its students, faculty and staff with healthy food in an environment that promotes a healthy lifestyle. This proactive approach to healthy eating for the DWC family is part of our commitment to help the UAE combat obesity, diabetic diseases and other lifestyle problems such as heart problems.”

The program also included a short play performed by members of DWC Student Parliament in order to help new students feel comfortable in their new environment. Alia Shamlan, member of DWC Student Parliament said, “We welcomed the new students and explained some of the campus rules. New students were very excited about starting the New Academic Year and asked many questions. We tried to make them feel that they are welcome on campus as they begin their first year of college.”

To help the students keep track of their progress through the Orientation program, each student was given a ‘passport’, which was a new initiative. Students were able to check off things they learn about and track their own progress in the adjustment to college life. Part of the schedule included fun activities for students to get to know one another as well as to learn more about their peers.

“We want every student to be successful,” said Mary Lackie, Student Affairs Supervisor, “These students are coming from many different schools and academic backgrounds with differing skills and abilities. We want to give all of them the tools they need to make the transition to higher education so that they can fulfill their academic and career goals – their dreams for their futures.”

“We want students to be successful in their classes, of course,” added Lackie, “but we also want them to get involved in extracurricular activities. In addition to being a lot of fun, activities also help students to learn and build practical skills outside of the classroom.”

Another source of inspiration for the students will be DWC alumnae speakers as Tareifah Ajaif, a BA graduate of Business Administration in 2000, and who is now working on her Ph.D., will address the Foundation students on Monday, September 20. Mariam Al Afridi, who graduated with a Bachelor of IT in 2005, and is a recipient of the Alumnae Academic Achievement Award will speak on Tuesday, September 21, to the new students who were admitted directly into the bachelor degree program. Both speakers will share information to help the students understand that they started in the same place these new students are – scared, but excited to start their college careers. Through hard work and perseverance, they too can achieve their dreams.

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) will offer a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program from Autumn 2010, following approval by the Commission for Academic Accreditation, UAE Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research.

Along with the recent accreditation of the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA), this positions UOWD as a leading research and teaching University in the UAE. It also makes UOWD the first nationally accredited private university in the UAE to offer PhD and DBA programs.

"The UOWD is proud of reaching this important milestone in our development," said Professor Rob Whelan, President of UOWD. "This outcome is an acknowledgement of the quality of our academic staff, whose qualifications, skills and research output were critical to the success of the PhD proposal. It also reflects very well on our administrative staff and processes."

The goal of the PhD is to provide a combination of research skills training, exposure to the latest business research and conducting an original research project, which will contribute to the development of theory in the field. This program will see students grow as ‘professional researchers’, leading to careers in research organisations and Universities.

In contrast, the Doctor of Business Administration degree focuses on research which will lead to improved business practice, and is aimed at professionals who are already working in business – helping them to become ‘researching professionals’.

"Both private and public sector organisations in the UAE are increasingly seeking professionals differentiated by their capacity to undertake original, theoretical research to deal with organisational challenges. The UAE’s rapidly expanding higher education sector is also creating demand for research-active academics with doctoral qualifications for teaching in advanced subjects and to conduct research," said Prof. Whelan. "UOWD aims to cater to this important need for research degrees by offering the PhD."

Candidates wishing to undertake the UOWD PhD should hold a Masters degree in a business related discipline. Applicants must have completed their studies from a recognised tertiary institution and achieved a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 (or equivalent). A candidate requires an (Academic) IELTS (or equivalent) with an overall score of at least 6.0. Their English language skills will then be assessed based on a number of additional criteria, including writing skills as demonstrated in a written research proposal and the results of a ‘WritePlacer’ test and language skills as demonstrated at an interview.

Relevant industry-related experience will be taken into consideration when assessing applications. However; candidates without work experience may be considered based on previous strong academic performance in a relevant business discipline and demonstrated ability to complete a research degree.

The first part of the PhD program comprises coursework focussed on the acquisition of research skills. Progression from this coursework to the research component of the program will require passing both the written and oral components of a comprehensive exam.
