As part of British Council’s involvement in the Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival 2011, the UK’s international organisation for educational opportunities and cultural relations will be hosting a series of workshops in the UAE to educate and excite audiences about the musical genre.

“Music provides a perfect platform to share experiences and learn about different cultures. The workshops with Cleveland Watkiss, one of the leading UK jazz performers, and clarinet player Arun Ghosh will introduce audiences in the UAE to this style of music and also broaden their knowledge of the UK jazz scene,” said Michel Bechara, Director of Projects, British Council, UAE.

Hailed as the best jazz singer in Britain by the London Evening Standard newspaper, virtuoso vocalist, actor and educator Cleveland Watkiss will lead a vocal workshop at thejamjar in Dubai as part of British Council’s educational agenda, in partnership with Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival 2011 and UK Jazz Services. His enjoyable and relaxed sessions will cover warm-up techniques, posture and breathing, improvisation, unlocking and freeing the voice and techniques for group work.

Founded in 2005, thejamjar is a creative space that works to promote artists and support the development of Dubai’s arts scene through its extensive arts programme, educational initiatives and community projects across a diverse range of art forms including visual art, film, music, theatre and more.

In addition, British Council, with the support of the Centre for Musical Arts, will be hosting a vocal workshop with Cleveland Watkiss at Dubai College for students from different Dubai-based schools as an introduction to jazz music and singing techniques.

British Council will also be providing an Introduction to Jazz session for students at the UAE University in Al Ain with the Arun Ghosh Quintet, followed by a performance at the university exclusively for students. Clarinet player Arun Ghosh was born in Calcutta, bred in Bolton, matured in Manchester and is now living in London and his musical vision and vocabulary reflects his rich geographical heritage. Arun’s Indo-Jazz Group plays original music of South Asian origin with a contemporary jazz attitude, rocking urban beats and the passion of punk.

“At the British Council we draw upon the innovation and creativity of the UK’s contemporary music scene to open up the arts to more young people. The students will learn about a style of music that they may not have encountered before and also benefit from the expertise and insight of a leading jazz performer,” continued Bechara.

The British Council’s Music Team works with an overseas network of arts managers and partners to plan and deliver high-impact projects involving professional artists and organisations from the UK. The organisation aims to strengthen the international profile of UK music and creativity, to communicate the diversity of UK society and to establish long-term partnerships overseas. The British Council continues to create and develop innovative, high-quality events and collaborations that link thousands of artists and cultural institutions around the world, drawing them into a closer relationship with the UK.

Bringing the best of British Jazz musicians to the UAE, British Council and its partners Jazz Services in the UK and Chillout Productions in the UAE are hosting seven UK bands as part of the Skywards Dubai International Jazz Festival 2011 du Jazz Garden programme, representing a wide mix of styles and influences including; Ian Shaw, one of the UK’s leading jazz vocalists, Ronnie Scott’s AllStars, pianist Neil Cowley and clarinet player Arun Ghosh.

Skywards Winning Artists To Showcase Their Work At Art Dubai Fair

The winners of Skywards’ (Emirates’ frequent flyer programme) first Future Artists Programme competition will be on hand in Dubai to showcase their winning designs and other art in their portfolios at the Art Dubai Fair. The Art Dubai Fair will take place at the Madinat Jumeirah from 16-19 March 2011.

The three artists, whose designs are displayed on the 2011 Skywards membership cards, received a prize of US $5,000 and are being flown to Dubai to participate in the fair. The three winning designs, as well as each artist’s name, are displayed on the back of the new cards.

“Through the annual Future Artists Programme, winners enjoy global exposure and recognition for their work. The three winning artists have a unique opportunity to showcase their winning designs and portfolios at this year’s Art Dubai Fair,” said Brian LaBelle, Senior Vice President, Skywards. “We had a tremendous response to last year’s completion and encourage artists from around the world to submit their work for this year’s competition.”

The winning artists originate from Iraq and Iran. Gold card artist Nedim Kufi, originally from Baghdad, now living in the Netherlands, got his inspiration for the “Rumman” bronzes depicted on the Gold cards from the seeds of a pomegranate. “I was dissecting a pomegranate, carefully examining each seed, and arranging them on a table, one by one. It occurred to me to rearrange the seeds into a new artistic form, which was the inspiration for the 3D computer-generated image of scattered bronze nuggets now displayed on the Skywards Gold cards,” he said.

Silver card artist Amir Vafaei from Tehran, Iran, got his idea for “Waves” from the distinctive motifs in Turkmen carpet designs. “Each piece shown in this exhibition is part of a collection where the ideas are driven from Turkmen carpet designs,” said Amir Vafaei. “Undoubtedly, being able to display an art piece at any important international event is the ultimate for an artist; hence I am glad to be able to display four of my sculptures at Art Dubai, which has given me the chance to communicate with more audiences and artists worldwide.”

Blue card artist Kambiz Sabri from Tehran, Iran was inspired by mother-nature to produce his “Rain” design. “Rain is a blue message from the sky to the earth…the rain of love and peace for all people around the world,” he explained. “I created large rain drops in the space surrounded by a cube, a sculpture made of light and transparency. I have tried to display a dream with the special imagination of nature, by changing the scale and using transparent and decorative materials such as plexiglass.”

Judging was conducted by a panel of highly regarded industry professionals and experts and Skywards members. The panel of judges created a shortlist of entries which was then presented to Skywards members for final vote on the website. Among the judging criteria were creative merit, technical excellence and suitability for end use.

Last year winners were selected from more than 3,500 entries. The three winning entries are used on the Skywards membership cards, as well as all supporting online and offline communications and promotional material. The website for the competition is www.ourfutureartists.com. More details on the winners can be viewed there.

A new Future Artists Programme competition for new artwork for the 2012 membership cards will commence later this year. Details will be announced shortly. The competition is annual and open to budding artists in most countries around the globe. All styles of art, including sculpture, photography and paintings are considered.

Skywards membership cards will have an exciting new design next year. The winners of the first Skywards Future Artists programme — to find new artwork for the 2011 Skywards membership cards — have now been selected from more than 3,500 entries. Distribution of new cards to members will begin in January 2011.

Judging was conducted by Skywards members and a panel of highly regarded industry professionals and experts. The panel of judges created a shortlist of entries which was judged by the Skywards members through a voting process on the website. Among the judging criteria are creative merit, technical excellence and suitability for end use.

Through the Future Artists programme, exciting contemporary art is brought to the attention of a discerning global audience. It is a unique opportunity to reward artistic talent and showcase the art to millions of Skywards members in 236 countries around the world. The three winning designs, as well as each artist’s name, will be displayed on the new cards.

The winning artists are Nedim Kufi (the Netherlands) – Gold card; Amir Vafaei (Iran) – Silver card; and Kambiz Sabri (Iran) – Blue card. The Gold card art is a 3-D, computer-generated image of bronze nuggets. A silver geometric design motif of Turkoman rugs was chosen for the Silver card. A sculpture of light and transparency featuring enlarged rain drops was the winner for the Blue card art.

“We are very pleased to have such a tremendous response to our Future Artists programme. There are many, many talented artists around the world who participated in the competition. The use of colour, graphic design and creativity in the submissions was truly impressive, and so many could have been ‘winning’ entries,” said Brian LaBelle, Senior Vice President, Skywards.

The winning artwork on the new cards will replace designs from famous artists such as Damien Hirst. The winners will receive a commission of US$ 5,000, enjoy global exposure and recognition for their work and will be flown to Dubai, where their winning design artwork (and other art in their portfolios) will be displayed at the Art Dubai fair in March 2011.
